Join our community of friends, families and supporters as we present an evening of music, food, art and film. The event will showcase autistic adults in every aspect of the evening including: - Art show with more than 25 artists in attendance - Film panel featuring Lights, Camera, Friendship on the Spectrum" - a heartwarming and inspiring new reality TV show that follows a group of young adults on the autism spectrum as they navigate the outside world and new friendships. Through workshops and adventures led by instructors Joey Travolta, Susan Clausen, and Jennifer Cook (star of "Love on the Spectrum"), these individuals discover the power of connection, self-expression, and creativity. Local participants Rob Repass and Karlee Lowe will join us to discuss their experiences on the show - Musical performance by autistic DJ Jonah Parks, winner of Autism's Got Talent San Diego 2020 WHAT: Lights! In April and May, the Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library will present an exhibition of paintings created by longtime local teacher and Pacific Beach resident Nona Perrin. She will be showing 30 of her color-soaked works (many of them featuring wild animals) in an exhibit she has named, "Let's Get Wild!" Nona loves art and has spent her life immersed in creating, learning about or teaching art. She has evolved her own style while teaching art to thousands of young students in local public and private schools for over 25 years. She also taught art at most of the branches of the San Diego public libraries during that time. In addition to painting (using various media), she continues to study and create work in stained glass, ceramics, mosaics and sculpture. Explore natural dye color! Sunday, June 1, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. In this 2-hour workshop, explore eco-bundle dye, the art of infusing natural pigments onto fibers. Join fiber artist Jeanine Ertl and share in the ephemeral, mindful and magical beauty of this serendipitous dye process. You will learn about the gentle, fleeting nature of a diverse array of botanical and kitchen dyes while completing the process from start to finish—mordanting bundling, steaming and finishing. Each student will create two unique silk or cotton squares or scarves. Colors will shift and change before your eyes as you place natural dyestuffs, steam, unroll, and enjoy! And while bundles steam, we will talk about exploring the potential dyes in our homes, gardens and local area. Students are welcome to bring in their favorite flowers to explore using in your bundle. Each participant will leave with a booklet on the Eco-Bundle Dye process and two bundle dyed pieces. Ages 12+ years welcome, or 8+ years with an adult. If adult and child would like to make their own pieces, please purchase two spaces. After work, you can simply walk into a bar and meet local scientists and researchers from all types of fields. The Coronado Library is thrilled to announce that children's author Mac Barnett ("Triangle." "Sam and Dave Dig a Hole," "Mac Undercover"), will appear in person on Tuesday, May 20! Starting at 3:30 p.m., Mac will be at the library to meet fans and sign books. At 4 p.m., he will share picture book favorites and showcase the deeply impactful ways picture books blend words and illustrations, and even the turning of a page, to create a uniquely powerful reading experience. Mac will share his passion for picture books and invite children and adults alike to join him in celebrating what’s vibrant, joyful and inspiring about this quintessential – and highly participatory – American art form at this all ages and family friendly event. We were selected with the with the Coronado Unified School District as one of five libraries in the country that Mac would appear at in his role. As the only library West of the Rio Grande, we are thrilled to host Mac's only public appearance in Coronado for this tour. Each year, Barnett will visit only five locations as National Ambassador. Coronado selected out of 350 applicants for this honor and is his only site visit this school year and the very first one of his tour! This visit is made possible thanks to the Library of Congress and Every Child a Reader. Award-winning author Mac Barnett is excited to share his passion for picture books with children and adults. Bring the entire family to Free Second Sunday for our free family series, Play Day! Join us for a light-filled art activity inspired by the Light and Space movement and artists in MCASD’s permanent collection. Together, we will create magical, glitter paper lanterns using parchment paper, string, and cellophane, that will brighten and warm winter nights. Art Activity: Create paper lanterns filled with color and light. Schedule: At 11 a.m., explore Light and Space works in MCASD’s permanent collection through a kid friendly tour. From 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., enjoy music by a local DJ, get cozy in the book nook, sketch with water, and get book recommendations from the LIbrarian on the Go. At Noon and 1 p.m., sit and experience the soothing sounds of crystal bowls as they quiet your mind and lead you into a relaxed and introspective state. At 12:30 p.m., listen to stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Librarian on the Go. *Museum admission is free from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. for all visitors, with Play Day offerings happening between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. No RSVPs are required for Play Day admission.
