Chaak was a military working dog who spent 11 years in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Daniel Cornier was Chaak's handler, and adopted the Belgian Malinois when the dog was retired at Camp Pendleton. On Veterans Day, Chaak passed away after a brief illness.

As of Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at least 2,151 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Forrest W. Robertson, 35, lost his life Nov. 3 when enemy forces attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire. Robertson is survived by his wife, Marcie, and three daughters.

The I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Pendleton, will be the last major Marine Corps command to deploy to Afghanistan as the war winds down. On Wednesday, I MEF held a special reactivation ceremony on base in preparation for its year-long deployment in early 2014.

Michael Landsberry, the Sparks Middle School math teacher shot to death Monday by a student, was a Marine veteran. He also served in Afghanistan as a member of the Nevada Air National Guard.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Christopher O. Grant, 20, died October 20 while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Grant was based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The pregnant wife of Army Ranger Cpl. Josh Hargis, who gave his commander the "salute seen around the world" from his hospital bed, is speaking out about the unbelievable response the photo of the salute is generating. Hargis survived a suicide bombing in Afghanistan that killed San Diego native 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno, and three other soldiers on October 6.

Retired Army Capt. William Swenson is being inducted into the the Pentagon's Hall of Heroes today, one day after President Obama awarded him the Medal of Honor. Swenson, who has been out of the service since 2011, has requested a return to active duty.

The U.S. soldier killed Sunday in an insider attack was a Green Beret with a wife and three children. Staff Sgt. Patrick H. Quinn, 26, died in Paktika Province when a man wearing an Afghan army uniform opened fire at his base.
