Grier Signals His Move to Houston

San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Terry Grier says he will take the Houston superintendent job once the contract is finalized. He made the announcement to a group of district administrators at a back-to-school event today.

It was the first time Grier expressed his intentions to such a large group of San Diego Unified administrators. Roughly 700 principals, vice principals and central office staff were on hand at Kearny Mesa High School. They meet around this time every year to get focused goals and reforms before classes begin.

But Grier says he also used this opportunity to say that he's ready to become the leader of Houston's public school district.

“What I said to them, to honorable and honest, is that if I was offered a reasonable contract there, I would accept it,” Grier said. “They needed to know that. And they needed to hear that from me. That's the reason why I took this opportunity to share that with them.”

Grier says it has been one of the stormiest years in education he's had to deal with as a superintendent. He also commended the administrators for all their hard work, pointing to the recent increase in student test scores.
