The new year means a number of new laws in California. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg gives us an update.

Californians drink a lot of bottled water. A new law requires bottled water producers to tell consumers exactly where their water comes from. The information has to be on the label, or on a package insert.

Another new measure cracks down on people who are on probation for driving under the influence. All such offenders are prohibited from driving with a blood alcohol level of .01 or greater. Violators will lose their license and their vehicle will be impounded.

Products designed for children under three can no longer be sold in California if they contain phthalates. Phthalates are used in teething rings and other soft plastic toys. The chemical family has been linked to hormone disruption and genital defects.
