A record 69,225 students applied for undergraduate admissions to San Diego State University for the fall 2012 semester, the school announced today.
The number represents a 15 percent increase from last year and nearly 7,000 more applications than in the previous highest year -- 2008.
The application period ended on Nov. 30.
The total included nearly 51,000 prospective freshmen and 18,000 upper- division transfers, according to SDSU.
"I am extremely pleased to see the strong and continuing interest of applicants in San Diego State," said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman. "Our record number of applicants is a testament to the strength of our academic and co-curricular programs, as well as the extraordinary talents and efforts of our faculty, staff and students."
The California State University system received 665,860 applications, a 9 percent increase over last year.
In March, SDSU accepted 14,000 high school senior applicants and 2,500 transfers. Of those, 4,000 ended up attending as freshmen for the fall 2011 semester and 2,000 transfers enrolled.
