Supreme Court To Decide On Hearing Soledad Cross Case Next Week
The Supreme Court could announce Monday whether it will hear a long and highly contentious case on one of San Diego's landmarks: the Mount Soledad cross.

The nine justices of the Supreme Court have been discussing since Thursday whether to hear the case over the cross. The issue involves religious symbols on public land.

The 29-foot cross sits on the site of a veteran’s memorial in La Jolla. That land has been under federal control since 2006.

Last year the Ninth Circuit Court found that placing the cross on government land was unconstitutional. The Liberty Institute, a Texas-based legal foundation, challenged that ruling and appealed to the Supreme Court.

Supporters of the cross argue its message is not religious, but instead honors military veterans for their service.
