Councilwoman Myrtle Cole Declines To Ask Filner To Resign

In a weekly newsletter sent from her office on Friday, City Councilwoman Myrtle Cole declined to call on Mayor Bob Filner to resign over sexual harassment allegations.

Myrtle Cole talks in her campaign office.

Special Feature Read the Backstory

All of the accusations, statements and apologies from the key players in the developing story about allegations of sexual harassment in Mayor Bob Filner's office and calls from former mayoral supporters for his resignation.

Seven of the nine councilmembers have stated publicly that the mayor should step down, leaving only Cole and City Councilwoman Marti Emerald on Filner's side.

"I stated to the community and to the media that I wanted any and all women to feel safe and free to come forward and report sexual abuse and/or workplace abuse," Cole wrote in her newsletter. "This is a major part of due process. As due process is occurring, the Mayor announced that he is seeking professional help to address his problems associated with his treatment of females in and out of the workplace.

"I am pleased that women feel safe to come forward and I am pleased the Mayor is entering into professional treatment to address his problems.

"As a woman, I am deeply saddened by the allegations against him, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

"Let me be clear--I have no tolerance for sexual harassment or workplace abuse, and as I’ve stated prior, I encourage any and all individuals that have experienced any harassment in the government or private sector to come forward and begin the due process immediately."

Cole was endorsed by Filner during her recent campaign to fill the empty District 4 council seat.

Good for them, to stand against the stampede of irrationality. They are to be commended, not branded.

Well, cole you and others who "STAND BY THEIR MAN" will only look like fools when he goes down. No one thinks this is about due process. It's about ego, arrogance, criminal sexual battery.

Here's the BIG test. Do you have a young daughter or niece? If so, I challenge you to let them intern with him ALONE. See how far your due process concept goes.

This clown Myrtle Cole and Marti Emerald are exactly what is wrong with politicians and they're new at this. Blind political loyalty to Filner will be their downfall. In the mean time
Wait until a friend or relative or they are victimize by a loser like Filner. In the mean time they sanction this kind of behavior.
Thay need to be recalled too.

This statement from the article is really misleading:

"........leaving only Cole and City Councilwoman Marti Emerald on Filner's side."

I wouldn't say they are on Filner's side, they are on the side of due process.

That has been the problem with this thing all along, the irrational hysterics have painted anyone who calls for due process as "pro-sexual harassment" and "pro-Filner".

I think Filner should step down immediately, but I don't think it's fair to smear Ms. Cole because she is being careful about due process.

The comments against her here are unfair and disturbing.

Myrtle Cole and Marti Emerald are the new face of the Democratic Party.

No substance. No backbone. No courage.

In the words of the Mayor of London, they are:

"Great supine protoplasmic invertebrate jellies."

Come on CaDef, you are being so partisan.

Todd Gloria is a Democrat who has been on many national talk shows (Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow) calling for Filner to step-down.

Frye is a Democrat too.

But YOU are choosing the two who happen to not have called for Filner to resing yet as the "new face of the Democratic Party"?

That makes no sense.

I agree with Peking Duck SD- too much hysterics surrounding this. Anything thing with SEX sells. Dan Bauder recent article on this is very good. Essentially we all should be focusing on the policies we want to implement and that Filner began to implement. The shifting of culture of the city from good ole boys downtown network to a more populous sharing of the wealth. In the smoke and haze of this scandal the same corporate forces and certain politicians are trying to regain control.

If this was JUST a sex scandal between consenting adults, I wouldn't care.

But this is about sexual attacks upon non-consenting women along with criminal investigations into bribe taking and corruption.

I am probably using an overly broad brush for the Democratic Party, but I am trying to dispel the myth that they are the "party of women".

They most certainly are not and I hope women begin to engage third parties (such as the Green Party) that don't simply pay lip service to gender equality.

"Let me be clear--I have no tolerance for sexual harassment..." I disagree. Your (lack of) action indicates you actually have some tolerance for sexual harassment.

They are just betting that if Filner stays they will be rewarded and that if he goes they can just write off their lack of courage to "due process". You never know, they may be making a good bet- the recall process is legally muddled and now further impacted by imitation "Stampp" LGBT recall.

Political power at any cost is their true mantra and principles and morals do not enter into the equation.

I believe Mayor Filner should resign because his ability to run the city is seriously impaired.

But I have one simple question: How many of you who are so critical of Ms.Cole now were demanding due process when George Zimmerman was charged? Yeah, I thought so. Only Republicans and their "heroes" are entitled to due process. Anyone else is guilty until proven innocent...and in some cases even if proven innocent.

Those who are so hypocritical have no right to talk about other people's moral character.

due process = day in court. he can have his day in court OUTSIDE office. he doesn't need to drag the city down with him. he's an ugly old man inside and out.

"As a woman, I am deeply saddened by the allegations against him,..."

As a woman??? Hmmm. Think now.

Why would Cole (or Emerald) not take a stronger stand against Filner on behalf of her woman constituents? Where is her "womanly support" for the 7 women who decided to come forward? What do they have to gain - or lose? Does it not matter to them that they are elected city officials who are women and are NOT ALLOWED TO BE ALONE WITH THE MAYOR IN THE SAME ROOM! Is it only party affiliation that keeps these two elected officials not calling for Filner to step down? These two councilpersons are acting seriously counter-intuitive. Time for San Diegans to do the Filner dance on city hall with 102,000 registered voters when Filner returns from his two-week therapy vacation.
