Mayor Kevin Faulconer marked his 100th day in office Tuesday by signing into law a nearly $3 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

— Kevin Faulconer (@kevin_faulconer) June 10, 2014The budget -- approved Monday by the City Council on an 8-1 vote -- extends library hours, puts more officers in police academies, adds more fire academies, funds construction of a temporary fire station in the Skyline neighborhood to reduce response times, and provides more money for infrastructure projects.
"I said on day one that we were writing a new chapter in San Diego, a chapter written by and for the people of San Diego," Faulconer said. "That chapter officially begins Tuesday with a budget that ensures all residents have equal access to economic prosperity, quality city services and safe neighborhoods. There is something for every San Diegan and every neighborhood in this budget."
The lone dissenting vote was cast by Faulconer's former mayoral opponent, Councilman David Alvarez. He said only 2 percent of infrastructure spending next year was slated for his district, which includes Barrio Logan and South Bay communities like San Ysidro.
City Council President Todd Gloria called the spending plan "sound and fiscally responsible."
