San Diego police say a painter suspected of shooting and wounding a TV sportscaster was in a dispute with the victim over work done on his house.

Police Lt. Scott Wahl said Wednesday that the dispute centered on the suspect's painting of Kyle Kraska's Scripps Ranch home. Wahl didn't offer specifics.

Police allege Mike Montana fired multiple shots through the rear window of Kraska's silver Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday afternoon outside the house. CBS News 8 said Kraska's injuries are serious, but his prognosis is good.

Montana, 54, surrendered to SWAT officers at his El Cajon home shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday, nearly 10 hours after the ambush on the longtime local broadcaster.

He was booked into San Diego Central Jail about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday.

Federal court records show Montana filed for bankruptcy protection last year. His state business license was suspended in 2013 for nearly $2,000 in unpaid fees.

Kraska has been with CBS News 8 since 1999. The Emmy Award-winning broadcaster spent four years as morning and noon co-anchor before moving into the sports department 12 years ago. He also hosts the station's San Diego Chargers postgame show.

He previously worked for TV stations in New York, Florida, Texas and Los Angeles.
