Report Predicts Record Low Migrations From Mexico To U.S.

Mexico’s border research institute said in a report released Tuesday that migrations into the U.S. from Mexico are expected to reach a record low this year.

El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, or Colef, said migrations slowed during the first two quarters of this year as they did during the corresponding periods last year, and that they are unlikely to total much more than 100,000 by the end of 2015.

“We are entering another era,” Colef said in its report, noting the dramatic decrease in the flow of migrants from Mexico to the U.S.

In 2014, the number of migrations from Mexico to the U.S. plummeted to 164,621, down more than 41 percent from the previous year, and 80 percent lower than in 2007, the report said.

Colef said the drop is due to fewer job opportunities in the U.S. since the 2008 recession, as well as increased border security and deportations.

“The year 2015 depicts a scene of virtual paralysis in the binational labor market, without precedent in decades,” the report said.

Colef added that the hundreds of thousands of people who are now staying in Mexico instead of migrating to the U.S. presents both “a great opportunity and an enormous challenge for regional and national development" in Mexico.
