A San Diego-based biotech company is opening its doors and its 1,3000 square foot lab to the county's science students. Once a week they come in to the Biogen Idec Community Lab and work side-by-side with the company's own scientists. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.

Wearing a white lab coat and goggles, Seventh-grader Joshua Su reads the directions for this day's experiment to his lab partner. The experiment looks at the efficacy of a new cancer therapy.

Each Wednesday, a different seventh grade class gets to use the Biogen Idec community lab in University City. Bonita Vista teacher Brian Doherty took his students this week.

Doherty: "They're just mystified and in awe of everything that's going on and just having a great time seeing this stuff, it's really excited for them to be able to apply what they do and actually pretend like they are real scientists."

The community lab was developed through a partnership with the County Office of Education, the San Diego Science Alliance, and Biogen Idec. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS news.
