Gray whales migrate south

More than 25,000 gray whales will swim by San Diego's coastline as they make they're way to Baja California. Host Tom Fudge speaks with whale watching experts about these gigantic mammals and their annual journey from the South Arctic.

The Gray whale's trip is the longest migration undertaken by any mammal. Grays are relatively slow swimmers, cruising at an average speed of 6 miles per hour. The Birch Aquarium at Scripps offers naturalist-guided whale watching trips daily from San Diego's harbor. The aquarium also offers weekend trips into Mexico's whale calving lagoons. For more information, contact the Birch Aquarium. The 29th Annual Whale Watch Weekend and Intertidal Life Festival will take place this weekend at the Cabrillo National Monument located on Point Loma. For more information, call 619-557-5450.
