Pendleton Marines and Sailors celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day is Saturday. But Marines and Sailors at Camp Pendleton got a head start on the celebration today.

They helped clean up the area around the air station's control tower, and also planted bougainvillea and other drought resistant vegetation. The marines followed with a bar-b-que.

Dr. Diane Walsh is Camp Pendleton's Environmental Officer. She says the base has adopted many environmentally-friendly practices, like using vehicles that run on natural gas and biodiesel.

Walsh: "We have a number of recycling programs that we recycle rags that we clean the aircraft with, we use native plants in all of our landscaping, we have re-channeled water into all of the areas that were traditionally dry to put more plants in to support the wildlife that we have here."

This is the sixth straight year the Pendleton Marines have honored Earth Day.
