The San Diego City Council has approved the mayor's proposal to alter the Charger's lease. The football team can now shop around the County for another city willing to negotiate with them on a new stadium. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The city council vote was unanimous let the Chargers try their hand at negotiating a deal with other cities within the County of San Diego. Mayor Jerry Sanders says the city of San Diego doesn't have a dime of public money to invest in a new stadium. Councilman Jim Madaffer suggests a possible joint powers agreement between the County and another city to finance a stadium.

Jim Madaffer: "Thirty percent of all season ticket holders are inside the city of san diego I think with 70 percent outside the city. I think its only fair that it should not be the taxpayers that are left holding the ball."

Councilman Ben Hueso says, if you include the population of Tijuana, there are more than four million people in the region to support a new football stadium. The Chargers can begin looking outside San Diego County next year. Alison St John, KPBS News.
