California's growing methamphetamine problem was the topic of a State Senate committee hearing in San Diego Friday. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
Bay area State Senator Jackie Speier chaired the meeting. She's introduced two bills designed to crack down on meth abuse.
One would make it a crime to possess certain precursor chemicals used to make the drug. The other measure would ask the state to use private funds to create a anti-meth ad campaign.
San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob says government action alone won't solve the problem.
Jacob: "It takes education, it takes prevention efforts, working with schools, working with the prevention community. Ultimately, enforcement is the last resort."
San Diego County has seen a steep rise in meth-related emergency room visits. Meth seizures at the Mexican border are also up.
