A dynamic educator who fixed a bankrupt school district in Northern California may soon be San Diego County's new school superintendent. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
County school board members picked Randolph Ward to replace Rudy Castruita who's retiring as superintendent after more than a decade. Ward is the state-appointed administrator at the Oakland Unified School District. He accepted the post three years ago when the district was $60-million-dollars in debt. The selection process has been a well-guarded secret, but board president Sue Hartly confirms Ward is the top candidate.
Hartly: "This person is very skilled at bringing business partners and coordinating with the business community for the benefit of public education. He has also done a very good job at raising money for public education through bond issues."
Hartley says if board members and Ward agree to a contract, he'll manage a $400 million budget and oversee 42 school districts. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
