San Diego's summer heads for the record books
Summer officially ended over the weekend and it was a hot one in San Diego. In fact, this past summer was the third hottest summer on record. KPBS Radio’s Jane Morton has details.
June, July and August were warmer than average in San Diego. Mark Maydee is with the National Weather Service in San Diego. He says records have been kept dating back to 1872.
Maydee: “Five of the ten warmest occurred in the last 25 years. A lot of them occurring in the 80’s now we had one in 2006 so there could be a trend there to read into. It would take a little more research to determine exactly how that’s impacting our area of Southern California rather than on a global scale.”
The ocean water temperature was warmer than usual as well. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 70’s much of the summer. The temperatures typically range from the upper 60’s in June and July to the low 70’s in August. For KPBS, I’m Jane Morton
