SD County Voters Break From Majority on Abortion Initiative, Other Measures

Proposition 85 would require doctors to consult parents before performing a teen abortion. Californians overall rejected that measure but San Diego County voters approved it. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps has more.

Proposition 85 was born in San Diego. The publisher of the San Diego Reader, Jim Holman, bankrolled the initiative for the second time in two years. And voters here passed the doomed abortion measure by a narrow margin. San Diego County voters also approved Proposition 90, which would limit the government’s ability to seize private property. But that measure also failed statewide.

San Diegans were evenly divided on Prop. 84, but ultimately turned down the water-quality initiative that voters elsewhere approved. Local voters agreed with the rest of California on most statewide races. They re-elected Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and chose Democrat Jerry Brown for attorney general. San Diego County also opted to re-elect Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, although by a narrower margin than the rest of the state. For KPBS, I’m Andrew Phelps.
