The San Diego Chargers say 2007 is a "critical" year for deciding the team's future. Under their lease with the City of San Diego, the Bolts could leave town if they don't find a place for a new stadium here. KPBS Radio's Andrew Phelps has more.
The Chargers rank Number One in the National Football League. But team spokesman Mark Fabiani says the Bolts are near the bottom in revenue. So the team wants a new stadium that could cost a billion dollars. Fabiani says the cost for taxpayers would be zero. Still, the team hasn't made a deal with any city in San Diego County. Fabiani says this year is decision time.
Fabiani: If we get to the end of 2007, and we don't have something to put on the ballot in 2008, we'll certainly have to look very hard at where we stand, because this is a whole year in front of us. It's a year where we ought to be able to get something done.
Fabiani spoke on KPBS Radio's These Days. He says the team will ignore offers from cities outside the county for the time being. The Chargers are looking at National City and Chula Vista as possible sites. For KPBS, I'm Andrew Phelps.
