San Diego Democratic Congressman Bob Filner has jumped into the fray over the massive Navy Broadway Complex development on San Diego’s waterfront. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Filner has written to the U.S. Attorney General to raise concerns about the proposed Navy Broadway development on San Diego’s Embarcadero. Filner writes that building a regional Navy fleet headquarters in an unprotected downtown waterfront location potentially threatens public safety.
The Navy has signed a lease with San Diego developer, Doug Manchester, to replace the existing aging Navy buildings with a state of the art headquarters overlooking the bay. Filner suggests there are more secure sites in the region than the planned location, which is arguably one of the most scenic and valuable sites in San Diego County.
Filner has also written to the new Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, democrat Carl Levin, asking him to launch an inquiry into whether the Navy’s proposed project meets legally required public review of the project. Alison St John, KPBS news.
