Thousands of students will flock to Mexican resort towns next week to party during spring break. But a group of San Diego State students are opting to do something much different with their free time. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Six SDSU students will hop in a van this Friday and head to New Orleans to help communities still reeling in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The group will spend the week volunteering at animal shelters, gutting houses, and tutoring school kids. The students say they're eager to help, but they also want to get a better understanding of what's happening since Katrina hit two years ago. Senior Julie Garretson says she's frustrated there's so little information out there.
Garretson : It’s like it went away -- and it hasn't gone away. It’s still there, and so I just felt like: we live here in San Diego, it’s gorgeous, but what are these people living in? And I feel like we need to -- even if it’s little -- we have to do something.
The students plan to establish a new club at SDSU dedicated to raising awareness of the current situation in New Orleans.
