Students at San Diego's Edison Elementary School got a special treat on Thursday for missing only a few days of school. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Edison students each got two big scoops of vanilla ice cream for helping to boost the school's historically low attendance levels.
Principal Cheri Taylor says before up to 30 students were absent every day. Now about five students miss class.
Taylor : We're trying to help everyone understand that we can't teach an empty chair, if there's no one sitting in the chair we can't teach them we can't love them we can't support them.
The San Diego school district loses state funding if kids aren't in class every day. But all that doesn't matter much to 10-year-old Andy Lee. He actually enjoys going to school.
Lee : My mom says education is good, but sometimes she wants me to take a break. But I tell her school is more important than having fun.
Lee is one of about five Edison students with perfect attendance.
