Gonzales Still Mum on Firings as Feinstein Fishes For Clues

Embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales had tough time in Washington on Tuesday. California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein questioned his controversial role in the firing of several U.S. Attorneys, including San Diego's Carol Lam. Charles Davis reports from Capitol Hill.

Alberto Gonzales entered the Senate Committee room to shouts of “liar” and calls for his resignation from protestors. His reception from senators on the committee wasn't much better.

Senator Feinstein accused Gonzales of lying to Congress last year regarding the Bush administration's use of warrantless wiretaps. She then pressed him regarding the firing of the U.S. Attorneys.

Feinstein : How many U.S. Attorneys did you approve to be summarily fired?

Gonzales : Senator, there may have been others… I would be happy to get back to you with that kind of information about who has left… but I don't know the answer to your question. But I can certainly find out.

Feinstein : You don't know after all we've been through? The hearing after hearing after hearing?

Feinstein has called for Gonzales to resign. She maintains that several of the attorneys were fired for not prosecuting election-year cases that might have helped Republicans.
