The largest volunteer coastal cleanup in California kicks off Saturday morning. More than 6,000 volunteers will scour San Diego County waterways and trails to collect trash. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has more.

Last year volunteers in the county collected nearly 200,000 pounds of debris from waterways, beaches and inland areas. There are more than 60 different coastal and inland cleanup sites this year.

Danielle Miller is with San Diego Coastkeeper , one of the groups coordinating the cleanup. She says plastic products continue to threaten marine life and the world's waterways.

Miller : Thinking about your purchases, what you buy and the effect it's going to have on the environment. Try to reuse before you buy something and not buying as much plastic as possible.

She says for the first time an underwater team will clean up part of San Diego Bay. Volunteers can register at Coastkeeper's web site. The cleanup is part of a worldwide event with simultaneous efforts in all states and more than 70 countries.
