Momentum Ebbs in Campaign to Shift State's Electoral Balance

A proposed ballot measure to change the way California awards its electoral votes is losing steam fast. From Sacramento, Marianne Russ reports.

Just as the committee began gathering signatures to get the Republican-backed measure on the ballot, several key supporters have resigned.

Fund-raiser Marty Wilson of Sacramento says there just wasn't enough support -- financial or otherwise.   Under the measure, California would have awarded its votes by congressional district, rather than the current winner-take-all method.

That could have meant a significant number of electoral votes for the Republican candidate in a state that leans left. Democrats had launched a counter-campaign, calling it a GOP plot that could alter the outcome of the 2008 presidential election.

A big decision awaits some voters this April as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
