Virtually all public school districts in San Diego County are closed today. That includes the state's second largest district -- San Diego Unified. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
San Diego Unified's has about 180 campuses...all of them are closed today. However, the district's six child care centers are open for those parents who have to work. Superintendent Carl Cohn decided to shut the entire district down because the fires were affecting more and more of its families and employees.
We've heard about lots of people who live in areas that are directly affected by the fires, and of course that's difficult for them. We have some employees here at the central office who evacuated their homes and then came here.
Cohn says the district is helping in emergency efforts with providing school evacuation sites and school buses to transport residents or hospital patients.
Virtually all public school districts in San Diego county are closed today. Most private schools, county colleges and universities are also closed. The majority of extra curricular activities and events have been cancelled.
