San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis says drug agents have disrupted a major distribution network of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroine. 59 suspected drug traffickers were arrested in San Diego County. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has the story.
Federal and local agents worked undercover for three years. It's called “Operation Funk 49.” More than 100 people face charges throughout the United States. The district attorney says investigators got a tip from a low-level drug user in 2004. Then she says they realized they were on to something huge.
Dumanis : Investigators followed the trail, targeting dozens of suspects in the county of San Diego, and for years, we patiently followed the drug distribution web to other cities in the nation.
Cities such as San Francisco, Detroit, Atlanta and New York. Dumanis says large quantities of drugs were smuggled in from Mexico.
She says agents seized more than $9 million in local drug money. More than $25 million nationwide.
