San Diego district officials have been holding marathon meetings to pinpoint the number. Of the 1,100 people to get layoff notices, roughly 435 are elementary school teachers. Just over 200 are middle and high school teachers.
The district's Ursula Kreomer says things might change as budget talks move forward.
Kreomer: The letters will go out and it doesn't mean the person who receives the letter will lose their job. The reductions that we're looking at are for the 2008 2009 school year and that fiscal year starts July 1st. So these reductions would take place starting the beginning of July.
The district could lose 80 million dollars in state education funding. San Diego school trustees will vote on the final number of layoff notices to be sent during next week's school board meeting.
