Gov. Guarantees Fight Against Measures to Ban Same Sex Marriage

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says he would fight a ballot measure that bans same-sex marriage in that state. David Nogueras has that story.

This is the first time Schwarzenegger has publicly opposed such a measure. The governor previously vetoed bills that would have legalized gay marriage.

Schwarzenegger was in San Diego at the national convention of Log Cabin Republicans . That's the nation’s largest gay Republican political group.

The governor was asked if he would oppose a ballot initiative limiting gay marriage.

Schwarzenegger : First of all I think that it will never happen in California because I think that California people are much further along with that issue, and number two, I’ll always be there to fight against that.

The last time California voters were asked to weigh in on the issue was eight years ago. They overwhelmingly passed Proposition 22, a measure barring California from recognizing same-sex unions adopted in other states.

For KPBS, I’m David Nogueras.
