In Second Protest, Tijuana Doctors Demand Authorities Stem Violence

Most outpatient services at Tijuana’s General Hospital were suspended again this morning as doctors protested kidnappings and violence in the city. It’s the second time doctors there have stopped work to demand authorities crackdown. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

Dozens of doctors in white coats gathered on the steps outside the hospital. Many say drug cartel kidnappers target them.

They also say they risk getting caught in the crossfire as they treat wounded members of drug cartels.

Unidentified doctor : We are tired of being afraid to go out in the streets. We are tired of being afraid to go to restaurants because we get mugged.

A doctor who would not give her name says she’s also tired of government indifference.

Unidentified doctor : The governor just laughs and says, “Hey, take a karate course or something cause the kidnappings will keep on being.”

Local and federal officials vowed last week to redouble their efforts to combat kidnappers.
