Students at a San Diego County High School are hoping to win a top prize for their environmental work.
This spring Social Justice students at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad started a campaign on campus to encourage their community to stop using plastic water bottles.
They asked people to switch to re-usable bottles in an effort to be more environmentally sustainable.
Along the way, the students made a couple of short videos and entered a contest open to all schools in North America.
The school has been selected as one of the top 3 finalists out of 174 teams.
A public vote on a Web site decides who will take home the $50,000 prize package, which includes $10,000 in cash, $15,000 worth of computers and other school equipment.
The web site is operated by
