Jiri Menzel's I Served the King of England (Sony Pictures Classics)
The Czechs have always displayed a unique sense of humor. I remember being impressed by the story of how Czech citizens in '68 removed street signs so that invading tanks would get lost. Now that reveals a sly sense of humor. A distinctive humor regarding serious issues is also served up in Jiri Menzel's new film I Served the King of England (opening September 5 at Landmark's Hillcrest Cinemas ) based on a novel by acclaimed Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. Menzel previously adapted Hrabal's Closely Watched Trains , which nabbed him a foreign film Oscar in 1967.
