South San Diego County Under Pest Quarantine

State and federal authorities have placed part of southern San Diego County under quarantine to regulate the movement of citrus and citrus-related plants in and out of the area.

State and federal authorities have placed part of southern San Diego County under quarantine to regulate the movement of citrus and citrus-related plants in and out of the area.

Agricultural agencies say they took the step Thursday after more than 250 Asian citrus psyllids - a sap-sucking, aphid-like insect - were discovered during the last two weeks in the South Bay Terrace area of San Diego.

Officials say the quarantine does not affect the county's major-citrus producing region, which lies to the north of the quarantine boundary.

The quarantine area includes 1,181 square miles and extends from the border with Mexico north to state Highway 78 and east to Ramona.
