t is gearing up to open its first virtual high school next month. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the details.
San Diego Unified is the first public school district in the county to offer a virtual high school. District officials say the program is for students who want to study independently at home or for students who need to make up course credit.
They'll do that by accessing online classes and assignments for their grade level.
Darryl La Gace is the district's technology director. He says 75 students will make-up the first class. Four teachers will guide them through their studies by email, chat rooms and digital whiteboards.
La Gace:
A teacher can actually takeover a students screen from home and be able to work out a math problem, for example, and watch the student work it out. So there are a lot of ways in which technology can make this one-on-one experience much better for the child.
Students are provided with laptops and free broadband access. District officials hope to open satellite campuses throughout the district.
