The world's largest gathering of public health professionals is taking place at the San Diego Convention Center this week. The theme of the conference is "Public Health Without Borders". KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
Pandemic flu. Tuberculosis. HIV. These are just some of the infectious diseases that public health professionals worldwide are concerned about.
The American Public Health Association meeting is bringing together doctors, researchers, and educators to discuss these conditions.
Dr. Georges Benjamin is the group's executive director.
Dr. Georges Benjamin: Diseases never respect borders. And I think that's the point of our meeting. If we're very serious about public health, we need to be serious about the health and well being of all of the nations of the world, all the people of the world.
One topic of interest at the meeting is proper disease surveillance across international borders. There's also a focus on health issues that affect immigrants and refugees.
