The powerful storm hitting California has caused at least one traffic fatality and has forced hundreds of people to flee their homes in a suburb devastated by wildfire just last month and now under threat of mudslides.

Heavy snow closed down the Cajon Pass east of Los Angeles.

North of the city, snowfall has forced the California Highway Patrol to shepherd motorists across the Tejon Pass in caravans.

The CHP says at least one person was killed in the San Diego area when an armored truck slid off a wet highway and rolled down an embankment.

Hundreds of homes in the canyon areas of Yorba Linda have been ordered to evacuate this morning. Last month, 100 homes were lost there to a wildfire.

A National Weather Service meteorologist says the storm is expected to linger in Southern California through Wednesday, although showers are expected to be lighter tomorrow.
