Westfield, which owns several of the largest Malls in San Diego County, has filed suit to block the development of a new Shopping Center in Oceanside. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Westfield is suing to prevent the Pavilion Mall from being built at the site of the historic Drive In Movie Theatre in Oceanside.

Oceanside City Councilman Jerry Kern says Westfield is just worried the new Mall will compete with its Carlsbad Shopping Center.

Kern : "Westfield wants to redo Plaza Camino Real. Anything  they can do to delay the Pavilion,  that means they can attract those tenants to Westfield. It’s a dog eat dog world out there right now. I don’t think they plan on winning, I think they plan on delaying."

Westfield’s suit argues Oceanside rushed its environmental impact report on the new mall, which would become the largest shopping center in Oceanside.

Oceanside officials say the Pavilion project will probably have to be delayed in any case, because of the economic downturn.
