Chula Vista Council May Declare Fiscal Emergency

The Chula Vista City Council will decide tonight whether to declare a fiscal state of emergency for the city. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.

Chula Vista is facing a projected 20 million dollar budget gap in its next fiscal year. Mayor Cheryl Cox says declaring the emergency would allow the city to explore additional revenue sources.

Cox: But it does allow a city council to ask its residents if its residents are interested in adding to their tax roles in order to um, to provide an adequate level of services. And the first issue of course that comes to mind is a sales tax revenue component.

Cox says the council must vote unanimously to approve the state of emergency. She says the city is providing vital services but may have to cut funding for libraries, parks and the nature center among other things. Cox does not expect to receive any help from California or the federal government.
