Millions of Californians on Medi-Cal may see their health benefits severely restricted as a result of the state's new budget. The final decision rests with the Department of Finance and the State Treasurer. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
The decision depends on how much federal stimulus money California gets by June 2010. If it's believed the state will get ten billion dollars, the most severe Medi-Cal cuts will be rescinded. Otherwise, adults on Medi-Cal will longer be able to get dental care and a host of other services.
Anthony Wright is with Health Access California . He says more than three-million people could be in trouble.
Anthony Wright: They'll either be in significant debt and place additional burden on especially safety net healthcare providers, or they simply won't get the care that they need and they will live sicker, die younger, as a result.
The State Finance Director and Treasurer must make their decision by April 1st.
