San Diego International Airport Receives $28.3 Million In Federal Economic Stimulus Funds

The San Diego International Airport has received $28.3 million in federal economic stimulus funds to install a baggage screening system to detect explosives.

The money was among $78 million in grants announced by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano today for airport security technology projects around the country.

"These state-of-the-art technologies will strengthen security for travelers by enhancing our capability to detect and disrupt threats of terrorism," Napolitano said.

The system being installed at San Diego International Airport uses advanced technology to screen checked baggage for explosives, while streamlining the ticketing and boarding process for travelers, according to the DHS.

It also has special on-screen resolution capabilities to aid security officers screening baggage.
