California's New Supreme Court Justice Sworn In

California's newest State Supreme Court Justice has been sworn in. Governor Jerry Brown administered the oath of office to UC Berkeley Law Professor Goodwin Liu today.

During a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda Brown said Liu's confirmation to the court showed the progress that California has made since the 19th century, when anti-Chinese laws were passed:

"I really believe that Goodwin Liu is an individual who will exemplify the finest of scholarship and also the kind of character and temperament that brings people together and really is the exact right person for the particular period we're in now," Brown stated.

Liu, whose parents came to the U.S. from Taiwan, called his new job the "opportunity of a lifetime." President Obama had nominated Liu previously to a federal appeals court, but Republicans blocked his confirmation.
