Former Scripps director Edward Frieman dies at 87

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Edward Frieman, a former head of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a national adviser on defense, energy and science policy, has died. He was 87.

Scripps, which is based at UC San Diego, says Frieman died of a respiratory illness on April 11 at a San Diego hospital.

Frieman was a plasma physicist and former Navy deep-sea diver who took part in early atom bomb testing.

He was a professor at Princeton University for more than 25 years but left in 1979 to become assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Frieman also served on various advisory panels covering a wide range of issues.

He was named director of Scripps and UC San Diego vice chancellor of marine sciences in 1986. He served for a decade before retiring.
