Komen San Diego Three-Day Walk Begins Trek From Del Mar

Hundreds of people motivated to fight breast cancer began the annual Komen San Diego Three-Day Walk fundraiser Friday.

The trek will cover a total of 60 miles. It started at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and will wind up with a celebration Sunday afternoon at Petco Park.

Special cheering stations will be set up along the route to urge the walkers on. Walkers were set to complete the first day in Pacific Beach.

"It's an experience that you must have in your lifetime," walker Kris Trockey told 10News. "It's life-changing."

Others said it was a sign that they weren't alone in their fight against the disease.

One woman told media that she was walking in memory of her sister, who died after a 20-year battle with breast cancer. Another said the disease took her child at the age of nine.

Walkers were required to raise at least $2,300 to participate.

Organizers say the walkers usually raise an average of around $3,000.

The walk is the second major event for Susan G. Komen for the Cure this month in San Diego. About 14,000 people took part in the 17th annual Race for the Cure 5K on Nov. 3.
