Pope Francis will celebrate the Mass of Canonization of Junipero Serra at Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. at 4:15 p.m. ET.
After speaking with President Obama at White House this morning, the pontiff met with bishops of the United States at St. Matthew's Cathedral. The last event scheduled for Francis today is the canonization mass of Junipero Serra, the first Hispanic saint and the first saint to be canonized in the U.S.
While some Native American groups object to the canonization of a priest who converted indigenous people to Christianity using force, more than 25,000 people are expected to be on hand at the outdoor mass.
