The public is encouraged to line streets Tuesday for the funeral procession of a Coronado-based Navy explosives technician killed in a bomb blast in northern Iraq.
Chief Petty Officer Jason C. Finan, 34, of Anaheim, died Oct. 20 during an offensive to dislodge Islamic State forces from the city of Mosul. He left behind a wife and 7-year-old son.
After Finan's funeral at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, his body will be driven to Miramar National Cemetery for a private burial service. Finan's family welcomes friends, sailors, veterans and other members of the public to line the route to show respect for his service and sacrifice, accordign to a Navy statement.
"Chief Finan was extremely proud of his service to his country, he was deeply respected by his peers and teammates," said Capt. Dean Muriano, commander of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1.
According to the Navy, the procession will leave the church at 655 C Ave. around noon, turn left onto Sixth Street, toward Alameda Boulevard, turn right onto Fourth Street and head to the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.
The procession route will go northbound on state Route 163 to north 805, exiting at Nobel Drive, where the cemetery is located.
Finan's remains were returned to San Diego on Friday.
