Federal authorities say they are reviewing their detention policies after leaving a forgotten 24-year-old student from the University of California, San Diego in a holding cell for five days.
U-T San Diego reports Monday that the unidentified man and eight others were detained following a drug bust that yielded 18,000 ecstasy pills, other drugs and weapons.
Drug Enforcement Administration spokeswoman Amy Roderick says eight suspects were taken elsewhere, but the man was somehow left behind. It wasn't clear if he had any access to food or water.
Last Wednesday — five days later — paramedics were summoned to the cell and took the man to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
Roderick says the man told agents he had used methamphetamine that he found in the cell.
