Southern California consumers who bought peaches, nectarines or plums at Costco and Trader Joe's are being asked to return them.
A Central California company issued a voluntary national recall of the fresh fruit that may be contaminated with listeria. Listeria can cause severe flu-like symptoms.
Wawona Packing found evidence of the bacteria at a Tulare County packing house. The lines were shut down, retrofitted and sanitized, and the voluntary recall went into effect. There are no reports of illness.
Wendy Fink-Weber, a spokeswoman for the Western Produce Association, said a recall doesn't mean people got sick.
"It does not necessarily mean that there are illnesses involved. But in order to be safe, to make sure there is no jeopardy, a producer will recall the product and take it out of the stream of commerce," Fink-Weber said.
Costco and Trader Joe's are reaching out to customers who bought fruit over the past weekend. The stores are asking customers to return the fruit for a full refund.
