San Diego Unified students improved their standardized test scores in 2011. The results were released by the state Department of Education today.
San Diego Unified Deputy Superintendent Nellie Meyer said test scores have increased every year for the past six years.
"Many people are telling us that our schools are failing. We find that on the contrary, our schools are steadily making progress," said Meyer.
Fifty-nine percent of San Diego students scored either proficient or better in Language Arts -- higher than any other large urban district in the state.
Statewide, scores improved by 2 percentage points each in Math and Language Arts.
Deputy Superintendent Nellie Meyer says there still is an achievement gap, but minority students improved more than white students.
"We've seen particular growth in the Hispanic population as well as the African American population," said Meyer.
Overall, San Diego students scored higher in English, Math and Social Studies. But the biggest gain was in Science with a 4 percent increase from last year and a 30 percent increase since 2006.
