Some University of California students are growing increasingly critical of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s nomination as the next UC president.
A group of students and immigrant advocates plans to protest the nomination Thursday as UC Regents vote on her confirmation.
UC Student Association President Raquel Morales said she’s concerned about Napolitano’s record as secretary – particularly the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
“A lot of students fear that undocumented students are no longer going to feel welcome on their campuses, and they are also skeptical and fearful of what she as a new president will be doing and her commitment to this portion of the student body," said Morales.
Given Napolitano’s law-and-order background, Morales said students are also concerned about the growing police presence on campuses in response to protests over tuition increases.
The Board of Regents will meet to discuss Napolitano’s nomination Thursday afternoon in San Francisco.
