The group charged with developing proposals to protect several marine areas off San Diego's coast wants your feedback. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce tells us informal open houses are scheduled Monday night in Carlsbad and Tuesday night in San Diego.
The Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) requires the state to examine and redesign California's system of marine protected areas.
Melissa Miller-Henson is the program manager for the MLPA Initiative.
She says the informal three-hour sessions give people a chance to view maps, pick up written materials and ask questions of the people who helped develop the proposals.
"We really encourage folks to come out to the open houses and learn more about what's being proposed and to provide specific feedback on what they like or don't like about the proposals," says Miller-Henson. "And if they can't attend the open houses we have all the same information available on our Web site."
Miller-Henson says there are at least four areas recommended for protection off San Diego's coastline.
The proposals are developed during three "rounds" of development and feedback. The third and final round starts in August.
Miller-Henson says the final recommendations will be presented to the state Fish and Game Commission later this year.
